The papaya is pear-shaped and varies in size, typically between 15 and 45 centimeters in length.
The ripe fruit has a smooth, thin-skinned skin that ranges from greenish-yellow to bright orange.
When the fruit is cut open, the interior of the papaya is surrounded by a rich orange color, with a hollow area in the center filled with black seeds.
Taste and Texture:
The flesh of the papaya is soft, juicy and has a buttery consistency.
The taste varies from sweet to slightly spicy, depending on the ripeness of the fruit.
Ripe papayas are sweeter and have a pleasant, slightly aromatic taste.
Nutritional profile:
Papayas are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and also contain enzymes such as papain, which can aid digestion.
The black seeds in the center are edible, but have a pungent, peppery taste and are not usually eaten.
Use:
Papayas can be eaten raw, added to fruit salads, smoothies, juices or desserts, or even used in savory dishes.
They can also be used to prepare sauces, jams or chutneys.
Papaya is also sometimes used in cosmetic products due to its enzyme papain.
Storage and selection:
A ripe papaya should be recognizable by its pleasant scent and should give slightly when the peel is gently pressed.
Unripe papayas can continue to ripen at room temperature.
Ripe fruits should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within a few days to maintain freshness.
